Echteld critical of Hoedt after unfortunate moment in AZ return

Hoedt made his AZ return after 11 years but was at fault for Hapoel Beer Sheva's goal; Echteld praised his overall display but criticized the defensive error.

Wesley Hoedt returned to AZ on Thursday after 11 years away, making his first appearance since rejoining the club. The 32-year-old defender started alongside Wouter Goes in the Conference League match against Hapoel Beer Sheva. While AZ manager Leeroy Echteld was generally satisfied with Hoedt's performance and noted the outing would help build his fitness, he was critical of one moment: Hoedt was at fault for the opposition's goal and should have either cleared the ball immediately or communicated better with goalkeeper Jari De Busser.
