Newcastle crazy about him – Magpies keen on signing key player, transfer strategy for January explained

Newcastle are interested in Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, but the Portuguese club are unlikely to sell in January despite interest from multiple Premier League sides.

Newcastle United are monitoring FC Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt as a potential January signing, but face an uphill battle to land the 20-year-old Danish international.

Froholdt, who joined Porto from FC Copenhagen in June 2025 for €20m, has impressed in his debut season with eight goals and seven assists from 51 matches. He was named Porto's player of the year and has continued to perform this season with three goals from ten matches. Newcastle scouts watched him during Porto's Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven, and Tottenham have also shown interest.

However, journalist Gianni Di Marzio indicated a move is unlikely this month. "Froholdt is a key player for Porto. It is really difficult to buy Porto players, so even if Newcastle and other clubs are crazy about him, it is unlikely that he will be allowed to move in January. It is not Porto's strategy to sell their best players in January." With a contract until 2030, Porto are in a strong position to resist offers, meaning interested clubs will likely have to wait until summer.
