Extra prizes in cup tournament: special rings for individual standouts

The KNVB Cup introduces individual awards this season: rings for the tournament's best player and brightest talent in both men's and women's competitions.

The new KNVB Cup season begins this Tuesday with a fresh addition to the competition's honours. For the first time, individual prizes will be awarded alongside the traditional trophy: the Eurojackpot KNVB Cup Ring.

Two players from both the men's and women's tournaments will receive rings, selected by a jury comprising Pieter Zwart, Freek Jansen, Milan van Dongen and Fresia Cousiño Arias from Voetbal International and ESPN. The awards recognise standout individual performances at decisive moments in the cup run.

KNVB director Marianne van Leeuwen said: "The Eurojackpot KNVB Cup is all about players who rise above themselves at crucial moments. One action can mean the difference between elimination and progression. The Ring highlights individual achievements in the cup tournament and is a recognition players truly deserve." This is the second consecutive year a new prize has been added to the competition; last season saw the introduction of the Blue Pine Cone for the best amateur club.
