"At some point you have to respect certain laws": Lens supporters stand by their team before North derby despite travel bans

Lens supporters turned out in numbers for an open training session despite UEFA bans on away travel and the club's decision to block attendance at Friday's derby at Lille.

RC Lens opened training to the public on Wednesday morning at Stade François Blin, drawing over 3,500 supporters despite a tense backdrop. UEFA has banned Lens fans from travelling to Leipzig and Liverpool in the Champions League following flares thrown at Bruges and Prague, with fines totalling €95,000. In response, Lens banned supporters from attending Friday's derby against Lille at Pierre Mauroy stadium.

Despite the restrictions, fans remained vocal and passionate. They sang traditional chants like "Corons" and "Lensoise" and directed hostile songs toward Lille. Some supporters acknowledged the club's decision was necessary for safety, though a few flares were set off near the end of the session. Players including Florian Thauvin and Matthieu Udol were warmly received. Manager Yannick Cahuzac declined to discuss the absence of supporters at Lille, preferring to focus on the team's performance.
