Midfield: The Heart of the Game – New Di Canio Premier Special on Sky

Sky's Di Canio Premier Special examines midfielders as the engine of modern football, featuring analysis of Anderson, Tonali, Guimarães and Baleba.

The latest episode of Di Canio Premier Special on Sky and NOW focuses on midfielders as the heart of the game. The analysis highlights how the summer transfer market underscored the importance of central midfielders who dictate tempo and provide defensive cover.

Elliot Anderson, who played the ball more than any other player in the 2025-26 season while at Nottingham Forest with 3,323 touches, exemplifies the modern midfielder's demands. His move to Manchester City for €140 million reflects the premium placed on such players. The City spending spree also included Enzo Fernández (€140m) and Ayyoub Bouaddi (€95m) following Pep Guardiola's departure and Enzo Maresca's arrival.

Other significant midfield signings included Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal from Newcastle, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for €108 million—making him the second-most expensive Italian player ever. Di Canio contextualizes each player's role within their new teams, emphasizing the modern midfielder's need to be press-resistant, defensively sound, and capable of initiating attacks through vision and technical quality.
