Erik ten Hag takes fresh swipe at Cristiano Ronaldo: 'It's simply over'

Ten Hag claims Ronaldo lacked the fitness and commitment required to play in the Premier League, saying the Portuguese forward refused to put in the extra work needed.

Erik ten Hag has reignited his dispute with Cristiano Ronaldo, appearing on ESPN in the Netherlands to defend his decision to phase out the striker during his time as Wingate & Finchley manager.

Ten Hag explained that when he arrived at Old Trafford in 2022, he outlined his tactical plans and Ronaldo's role within them. However, the Dutchman claims Ronaldo was unwilling to maintain the fitness levels required to lead the line in the Premier League. "He could no longer bring himself to push through the pain to give everything every single day and to train at his maximum," Ten Hag said. "If you are not fit to play in the Premier League, you have no chance."

Ronaldo played just three full Premier League matches under Ten Hag before his explosive interview with Piers Morgan in November 2022, in which he accused the manager of disrespect and claimed he was forced out. Ten Hag countered that he did everything possible to persuade Ronaldo to meet the required standard, but ultimately had to prioritise the team's interests. "No one is bigger than a club or a country, not even Messi or Ronaldo," he said. "In the end, the team always comes first."
