Goalgetter Van Weert (36) retires from football

The 36-year-old striker retires after eight seasons abroad, including spells at AEK Athens and Atromitos.

Tom van Weert has announced his retirement from professional football at age 36. The Dutch striker's contract with Greek club Atromitos expired last summer, and he has decided not to seek a new club. Van Weert spent 18 seasons as a professional, beginning his career in the Netherlands with Den Bosch, Excelsior and Groningen before moving abroad in 2018. He scored 41 goals in 112 Eredivisie appearances and played for Aalborg, Volos, AEK Athens and Atromitos during his time overseas.
