Olwethu Makhanya Rangers hype played down as pundit bamboozled by Virgil van Dijk comparison

Rangers defender Makhanya has impressed since his summer arrival from Philadelphia Union, but pundit Pat Nevin has cautioned against comparisons to Van Dijk and Stones.

South African defender Olwethu Makhanya has made an immediate impact at Rangers following his £3 million summer transfer from Philadelphia Union, earning Premiership player of the month honours and helping the club to seven consecutive wins with five clean sheets. The 22-year-old has formed a strong partnership with Emmanuel Fernandez in defence. However, former Scotland winger Pat Nevin has played down hype surrounding the defender after hearing comparisons to Premier League stars Virgil van Dijk and John Stones, cautioning that it remains very early in Makhanya's Rangers career.
