"Much better of us" – Official unhappy over losing player to Liverpool, quizzed about launching fresh attempt

Bayern Munich honorary president Hoeneß says he regrets missing out on Wirtz, who has struggled to replicate his Leverkusen form at Liverpool since his €125m move last summer.

Florian Wirtz completed a €125m transfer to Liverpool in June 2025 from Bayer Leverkusen, where he had impressed with 16 goals and 15 assists in the 2024/25 season. However, the Germany international has failed to hit the same heights on Merseyside, managing just seven goals and 10 assists in 47 matches last season and only one goal and three assists from 10 games this term.

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß has expressed regret over the club's failure to secure Wirtz, telling Welt: "No. Because Florian would play much better for us than he does at Liverpool. I watch a lot of the team's games. They haven't integrated him properly at all. In Leverkusen, he got every ball; in Liverpool, he's just one of many."

When asked if Bayern would attempt to re-sign the 23-year-old given his struggles in England, Hoeneß ruled it out, citing Wirtz's long-term contract at Anfield which runs until 2030. Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer had already dismissed the prospect last weekend, stating the club is happy with their current squad.
