Arsenal finally end WSL slump with contentious derby win at Tottenham

Arsenal Women ended a 31-match WSL winless run with a 2-1 north London derby victory over Tottenham, with Alessia Russo's penalty proving decisive after a contentious handball decision.

Arsenal Women secured their first Women's Super League win since opening day with a 2-1 comeback victory over Tottenham in the north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Cathinka Tandberg headed Spurs into a 13th-minute lead from a corner, but Arsenal equalised within four minutes when Alessia Russo set up Georgia Stanway to score off the underside of the crossbar. Russo then converted a 56th-minute penalty after Ella Morris's raised arm blocked Tandberg's clearance, a decision that drew controversy but proved the winner.

The result ended Arsenal's 31-match league winless streak stretching back to March 2023 and eased pressure on manager Renee Slegers. Spurs' injury woes were compounded by a serious-looking injury to Alice Sombath. Arsenal host Benfica in the Champions League on 28 October before facing Aston Villa in the league next weekend.
