The Dutch League One sensation: 'Twelve people all had that mask on'

Dutch striker Sanches Fernandes has become a League One sensation at Huddersfield, scoring six goals and five assists in twelve matches since joining from Excelsior.

Derensili Sanches Fernandes has quickly become a fan favourite at Huddersfield Town after arriving from Excelsior last summer. The Dutch striker needed just eighteen minutes in his debut to score twice, and has since accumulated six goals and five assists in twelve League One matches as Huddersfield sit top of the table.

Sanches Fernandes has won over supporters with his performances and personality. After scoring against AFC Wimbledon, he celebrated by running to the sideline wearing a golden mask—a ritual that began at Excelsior after receiving golden football boots from sponsor Mizuno. The celebration caught on with fans, who began buying golden masks from the club shop. During the warm-up before the Sheffield Wednesday home fixture, Sanches Fernandes spotted approximately twelve supporters in a skybox all wearing the masks.

The EFL quickly intervened, warning him that the mask celebration would result in a yellow card if repeated. He has since celebrated his subsequent goals conventionally, though he hints the masked celebration may return in future.
