Paul Scholes picks out Michael Carrick replacement 'miles' clear for Man United

Scholes backs Antonio Conte as Manchester United's next manager, calling him 'miles ahead' of Nagelsmann, Emery and Howe, though Carrick remains in post after Monday talks.

Paul Scholes has weighed in on Manchester United's managerial situation, backing Antonio Conte as the standout candidate to replace Michael Carrick if the club decides to make a change. Carrick faced intense scrutiny following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, with discussions about his future held on Monday morning. However, he returned to lead training on Tuesday and will be given the opportunity to turn things around.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football, Scholes argued that Conte should be the priority among the free agents being considered, alongside Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe. "When I'm talking best in class and you talk them four, I think Antonio Conte's miles ahead of all of them," Scholes said. He acknowledged Conte's volatile personality but praised his track record at elite clubs, citing his success at Juventus and his Serie A title win with Napoli. Scholes also discussed Unai Emery as a potential option, noting his Europa League success with Aston Villa, though he believes Conte remains the superior choice.

Conte, who left Napoli in the summer, has been linked with United in recent media reports but released a statement denying unfounded claims about financial demands and requests for full control.
