Michael Carrick's crunch Man United meeting with Bruno Fernandes set for Chelsea return

Carrick has held clear-the-air talks with his squad ahead of Chelsea; a resolution on Fernandes' captaincy is expected after the weekend.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has conducted clear-the-air discussions with his squad and backroom staff as he attempts to unite the team ahead of their Premier League clash with Chelsea. The talks follow two weeks of player criticism and come amid intense speculation about Carrick's own future at Old Trafford, with the club on an eight-match run without a win.

The central issue is captain Bruno Fernandes' role after he was benched against Bournemouth following public criticism of Carrick's tactics in a TNT Sports interview. Fernandes questioned the team's defensive approach after the Champions League defeat to Como, suggesting the staff should be "more brave under pressure" and press higher. Carrick has not yet met with club directors, but a resolution on Fernandes' captaincy is expected to be tackled "head-on" after the weekend, with the midfielder expected to be in contention to start at Stamford Bridge.

United's hierarchy—including co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Avram and Joel Glazer, chief executive Omar Berrada, and director of football Jason Wilcox—held lengthy talks over Carrick's future following the Bournemouth defeat. The decision to retain him was communicated on Tuesday lunchtime.
