Monchi: "Eder Sarabia is the right manager for this squad"

Monchi defended the sacking of Manolo González and backed new manager Eder Sarabia as the right fit for Espanyol's squad.

Monchi, Espanyol's sporting director, held a press conference on Thursday to address the departure of manager Manolo González and the appointment of Eder Sarabia as his replacement. The announcement came a day before Espanyol faced Villarreal, with interim manager Sergio García in charge.

Monchi expressed gratitude to González for his professionalism and dedication, stating that results were the ultimate judge. He defended the manner of the dismissal, explaining it was communicated respectfully in the dressing room rather than at the bus or upon arrival in Barcelona. Monchi acknowledged his own responsibility for the situation, noting that as a sporting director he struggles to part with managers in whom he has confidence.

Regarding Sarabia's appointment, Monchi said: "I believe he is the right manager for the squad we have and to reverse the results dynamic." He acknowledged that Sarabia's possession-based style requires time to implement but expressed confidence the squad has the qualities to adapt. Monchi prioritized escaping the relegation zone as urgent, while also emphasizing Espanyol must take a step forward this season.
