I was on Man United manager's staff - this is the grim reality behind the scenes

Phil Neville, who was on David Moyes' coaching staff in 2013, says Manchester United have been a "circus" for over a decade, with managers unable to pick signings and the club lacking top-to-bottom alignment.

Phil Neville, who served as a coach under David Moyes when he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, has criticized Manchester United's dysfunction behind the scenes. Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, Neville described witnessing a club where the manager lacked final say on signings, which were instead chosen based on fame, social media followers, and sponsorship potential rather than footballing merit.

Neville drew parallels between Moyes' brief 10-month tenure and the struggles of subsequent managers including José Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rúben Amorim, and current manager Michael Carrick. He attributed United's earlier success under Ferguson to disciplined leadership from both the manager and CEO David Gill, with clear alignment from top to bottom. Since Ferguson's departure in 2013, no manager has lasted more than three years.

Carrick's position remains precarious after a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, though he has been given a temporary reprieve. United have won just one Premier League game this season, been eliminated from the Carabao Cup, and suffered a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como. Neville emphasized that this instability has persisted for over a decade and requires comprehensive restructuring.
