Manchester United favourite explains why he joined – And reaction to Maradona praise

Retired midfielder Herrera reflects on his 2014 move to Manchester United and recalls Maradona's unexpected praise during his time at Old Trafford.

Ander Herrera has opened up about his decision to join Manchester United from Athletic Bilbao in summer 2014 for €36m, describing the club as "one of the biggest in the world" and "the final step to a superclub." The Spaniard made 189 appearances and scored 20 goals across five seasons, winning the Europa League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Community Shield, plus the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Award in 2016/17.

Herrera remains amazed by Diego Maradona singling him out for praise during his time at Old Trafford, recalling the moment with disbelief given the calibre of other players at the club. "When Maradona says something like that about you, it's not just anybody," Herrera said, adding he even messaged Maradona to thank him and plans to frame the compliment.

Herrera left United for Paris Saint-Germain in July 2019 on a free transfer after the club only offered an automatic one-year extension rather than a new deal. He spent five seasons in Paris before retiring.
