Derby to recreate iconic 1976 image

Athletic and Real Sociedad will recreate a historic 1976 photo before Sunday's derby, with original captains Iribar and Kortabarria leading players onto the pitch with the Basque flag.

Athletic Club and Real Sociedad will recreate an iconic moment from 5 December 1976 on Sunday before their LaLiga clash at San Mamés. The original captains, José Ángel Iribar and Inaxio Kortabarria, will lead both teams onto the pitch carrying the original ikurriña (Basque flag) that was used 50 years ago at Atotxa. The current players from both clubs will form a guard of honour to receive them, and all will pose together to recreate one of the most emblematic images in the recent history of both clubs. The moment commemorates the players' initiative from 1976, which became a symbol of historical and social significance for Real Sociedad, Athletic Club and Basque society. Both clubs are encouraging supporters to arrive early to witness and participate in the tribute.
