Flick sees 'wonderful' Frenkie de Jong as defensive option too

Flick confirmed De Jong can play centre-back if needed, praising his versatility and quality as Barcelona manage defensive injuries.

Hansi Flick has confirmed that Frenkie de Jong is an option to play centre-back for Barcelona if the situation demands it in coming weeks. The midfielder returned from knee injury as a substitute in El Clásico on Sunday, replacing Fermín López in midfield, but faces stiff competition from Rodri and Pedri for the controlling midfield roles.

Flick praised De Jong's versatility and quality: "Frenkie can play in different positions, including centre-back. I'm completely convinced of him. When he's 100% fit, he's a wonderful player. He has enormous quality, a good attitude and a wonderful mentality in defence."

Barcelona's defence has come under scrutiny after conceding six goals in losses to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. For now, Flick is using Gerard Martín and Pau Cubarsí as the centre-back pairing, but acknowledged the packed fixture schedule may force rotation. Flick also confirmed Barcelona are exploring options to sign an additional defender in the January transfer window.
