2026 Ballon d'Or: Kane beats Mbappé by 28 points; voting curiosities revealed

Kane won the 2026 Ballon d'Or by just 28 points over Mbappé, with first-place votes proving decisive: Kane received 40 compared to Mbappé's 23.

The 2026 Ballon d'Or voting breakdown reveals a remarkably tight race between Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé. Kane finished with 1,055 points to Mbappé's 1,027—a margin of just 28 points, the closest result since Messi's seven-point victory over Van Dijk in 2019. The difference came down to first-place votes: Kane secured 40 first-place votes against Mbappé's 23, despite Mbappé appearing more frequently on podiums overall (24 second-place votes to Kane's 11, and 17 third-place votes to Kane's 13). Both players received identical total podium placements at 64.

Curious voting patterns emerged across nations. Brazil's juror, Kleber Machado, voted for Lionel Messi as his top choice, citing Messi's 15-year dominance and ability to decide matches; Messi ultimately finished fifth overall but received first-place votes from six countries including Argentina, Panama, Belarus, the UAE, and China. Only Mexico and Ivory Coast excluded Kane from their top 10, while Greece, Scotland, and Ukraine left Mbappé out. Paraguay's juror notably voted Mbappé first despite the contentious 2026 World Cup knockout encounter between the nations, where Mbappé's penalty celebration and subsequent snub of Paraguay's goalkeeper sparked diplomatic friction.
