Is Fonseca's departure imminent? Lyon seems to have accepted the idea

Fonseca's emotional display during Lyon's 2-0 win over Angers fuels speculation about an imminent departure to Sporting CP, his boyhood club.

Paulo Fonseca's future at Lyon remains uncertain after the Portuguese coach's visibly emotional reaction during Sunday's 2-0 Ligue 1 victory over Angers. Fonseca was seen with tears in his eyes when celebrating goals and at the final whistle, sparking intense speculation about a move to Sporting CP, the club he has long wanted to manage.

Rumours of Fonseca's departure have intensified over the past two days. When asked about the possibility, Fonseca acknowledged it could happen, saying "everything is possible" regarding Sporting's interest and expressing uncertainty about finishing the season. His contract with Lyon runs until the end of the campaign, and negotiations over an extension have stalled despite the club's desire to keep him beyond summer.

Lyon's hierarchy appears resigned to the possibility of losing their manager. Club officials, the coaching staff and Fonseca himself have attributed the emotional scenes to the quality of the performance and result, but few are convinced. Captain Corentin Tolisso, who scored the second goal, acknowledged the uncertainty: "If he leaves, I want to thank him. If he stays, I want him to stay. He's an extraordinary coach." Fonseca publicly committed to being present the following day, but the coming days are expected to bring clarity on his future.
