Jesus regrets Ronaldo's Portugal departure: 'I asked him to stay'

Portugal manager Jesus says he asked Ronaldo to stay but respects his decision to retire from international football at 41.

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially ended his international career with Portugal following the recent international break. The 41-year-old announced his retirement on Thursday, describing it as a decision made with both heart and head.

Portugal manager Jorge Jesus confirmed the choice was entirely Ronaldo's. "I asked him to stay because I needed him at my side, but I must accept his decision," Jesus said. "He will always remain in the hearts of the Portuguese people and the national team." Jesus paid tribute to Ronaldo's legacy, calling him a worldwide icon and symbol for Portuguese youth who has meant enormously to the national team over the years.

Jesus and Ronaldo have worked together at both Portugal and Al-Nassr. To honour Ronaldo's contribution, Jesus has placed a large photograph of him in the entrance hall of Portugal's national team training complex as a permanent reminder for future generations.
