Flick leaves Rodri replacement debate open

Rodri ruled out with right hamstring injury suffered against Aston Villa; Flick undecided between Frenkie de Jong and Marc Bernal as replacement.

Barcelona midfielder Rodri will miss the visit to Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano due to a right hamstring injury sustained in the Champions League match against Aston Villa.

Manager Hansi Flick has two main candidates to fill the void in midfield: Frenkie de Jong and academy product Marc Bernal. When asked directly if the Atlético clash presents a good opportunity for De Jong's first start, Flick declined to reveal his selection plans but praised both players. "I haven't decided yet if De Jong will start," Flick said. "It's good to think about it at night. We know his quality, but also Bernal's. He did very well in the last match and I'm really liking him."

Flick highlighted the strengths of each option, noting that De Jong brings more experience and positional versatility while Bernal has impressed with his recent performances and positional awareness. "Frenkie can play in several positions, not just as a six. They're similar. Frenkie has more experience, but with the ball both have confidence and conviction," the manager explained. Flick also defended his management of Rodri's minutes, stating he had always agreed workload decisions with the player before the injury occurred.
