Arsenal: Noni Madueke recast after audition process as new role emerges with greater responsibility

Madueke shifts to right wing as Saka faces eight weeks out with quad injury; Arsenal's new leading attacker role offers him a chance to impress in big matches ahead.

Noni Madueke has been recast at Arsenal following Bukayo Saka's quad injury, which threatens to sideline the winger for up to eight weeks. Madueke, who had been competing for the left wing spot with Eberechi Eze, is now in pole position to claim the right-wing shirt as Arsenal's leading attacker.

In Arsenal's 2-0 win over Everton, Madueke showed promise in his audition for the role, turning sharply to drive into the box and executing a brilliant first touch before firing wide. Manager Mikel Arteta and captain Martin Odegaard were visibly encouraging, with Arteta sprinting to applaud him after a loose pass. The winger's relationship with right-back Ben White remains a work in progress, with the pair having several exchanges about positioning and overlap play.

With fixtures against Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid before Christmas, Madueke has high-profile stages to prove himself—both for club and country, having been left out of the last England squad.
