Jamie Carragher sends Liverpool transfer message over Trent Alexander-Arnold - 'a big mistake'

Carragher says Alexander-Arnold made a mistake joining Real Madrid and would welcome him back to Liverpool, where he's now third-choice right-back under Mourinho.

Jamie Carragher has criticised Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid, calling it "a big mistake" and suggesting the right-back should return to Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold, 28, joined Real Madrid in June 2025 for £10 million shortly before his Liverpool contract expired. However, he has struggled in Spain, making only 22 starts last season and being left out of England's World Cup squad. This season, he has been benched for four of the last six games by manager Jose Mourinho and played just minutes in Sunday's 2-1 La Liga win at Barcelona, where he is now third-choice right-back.

Carragher, a former Liverpool right-back, believes both player and club would benefit from a reunion. "I'd have him back," he said. "When you're third choice at a club, they're obviously wanting you to move on." He highlighted Liverpool's need for Alexander-Arnold's creativity in the full-back position, noting the club has struggled since his departure.

Carragher also praised new centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, who arrived for £60 million after Ibrahima Konate joined Real Madrid. He believes Jacquet is already an upgrade on Konate and is helping take pressure off captain Virgil van Dijk.
