Michael Carrick to stay on as Manchester United manager

Carrick survives the axe after high-level talks; he will manage United at Chelsea this weekend despite eight games without a win.

Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United manager for this weekend's Premier League trip to Chelsea after surviving what many expected to be his sacking.

Carrick's position had looked untenable following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, which extended United's winless run to eight games. The club has won only twice in 12 matches this season and suffered a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como last week.

However, after high-level talks involving chief executive Omar Berrada, director of football Jason Wilcox, co-owners the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the decision was made to keep faith in the 45-year-old. United insist Carrick will be given the chance to turn the situation around, though the club notably stated that the players are also part of the problem, suggesting Carrick isn't solely to blame for the crisis. Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are considered front runners should United decide to make a managerial change in the future.
