Who lacks freshness?

Flick blames lack of freshness for Barcelona's recent defeats, but critics argue the tactical problems stem from his defensive strategy and poor game management.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has repeatedly cited a lack of freshness as the reason for recent poor results, but the article questions whether the problem lies with his players' physical and mental capacity to execute his orders, or with the tactical system he deploys—or both.

The piece highlights several recent setbacks: a 2-1 Champions League semi-final loss to Inter on May 6, 2025, where Barcelona conceded twice in the final ten minutes while still attacking; elimination by Atlético Madrid in both the Champions League and Copa del Rey, with Barcelona undone by counterattacks that led to red cards for Cubarsí and Eric; a draw with Real Madrid where Barcelona continued to leave defensive spaces; and a loss to PSG where Barcelona conceded twice in five minutes after equalizing through Lamine in the 80th minute.

The analysis suggests Flick's problems go beyond player fatigue. Despite dominating possession in these matches, Barcelona's inability to manage decisive moments tactically—particularly a tendency to maintain an aggressive, high defensive line that leaves the team vulnerable to counterattacks—points to strategic failings rather than simply a lack of freshness from the players.
