The Old Trafford uproar

Carrick's position appears untenable after a 0-3 home defeat to Bournemouth, with captain Bruno Fernandes benched and Old Trafford fans directing fury at ownership and the board.

Michael Carrick's future as Manchester United manager looks increasingly uncertain following a chaotic 0-3 defeat at home to Bournemouth on Sunday. The midfielder and club captain Bruno Fernandes was dropped to the bench in a move that signals a serious breakdown in the relationship between manager and player. The atmosphere at Old Trafford was hostile, with fans directing their anger not at Carrick but at the club's ownership and board, with banners reading "The way you treat us is a disgrace" and "We want our club back" displayed before kick-off. The discontent stems from multiple issues: the club's poor form (six defeats in 12 matches, leaving United just one point above the relegation zone), plans for a new stadium, and proposed price increases for season-ticket holders.

Carrick made a gesture of contrition to supporters after the match, walking around the pitch and touching his heart, a rare show of accountability from a United manager. The club held a tense meeting on Monday night to discuss the immediate future, with reports suggesting conversations have already begun with other managers including Eddie Howe. However, the board has not yet severed ties with Carrick. The focus of fan anger has shifted to Jim Ratcliffe, the Glazer family, sporting director Jason Wilcox, and chief executive Omar Berrada, who faced a barrage of criticism from the stands.
