Kuyt named Fenerbahce interim boss ahead of Liverpool tie

Kuyt takes interim charge of Fenerbahce a week before they host Liverpool in the Champions League.

Dirk Kuyt has been appointed Fenerbahce's interim manager following Ismail Kartal's resignation after the club's 2-1 defeat to Galatasaray on Monday. The 46-year-old former Netherlands forward, who was serving as Kartal's assistant, will hold the position until a permanent head coach is appointed.

Kuyt's first match will be a league game against Goztepe on Saturday, followed by Fenerbahce's Champions League group stage tie against Liverpool on Wednesday, 4 November. The Dutchman spent six years at Liverpool between 2006 and 2012, winning the League Cup and scoring 71 goals in 285 appearances. He later played for Fenerbahce from 2012 to 2015, winning the Turkish league title with them in 2013-14, before spells at Feyenoord and retirement in 2017.

Fenerbahce currently sit fifth in the Turkish top-flight, six points behind leaders Galatasaray.
