Sunderland have favourable conditions for January signing – Black Cats already tabled offer

Sunderland have tabled an offer for Marseille forward Paixão after failing to sign him in summer; the player wants to leave and the French club need funds.

Sunderland are preparing another attempt to sign Marseille forward Igor Paixão in January after their summer bid fell short. The Black Cats made multiple offers in August, and Paixão agreed personal terms, but Marseille president Stéphane Richard blocked the sale despite the club's financial pressures, citing the importance of the player to the team's sporting project.

Paixão has since expressed his desire to leave Marseille, with a Premier League move his stated ambition. This season he has two goals and an assist from seven league appearances. Marseille face pressure to raise funds before June 30th to balance their books, while Sunderland, currently bottom of the Premier League with one win from eight matches, are actively looking to strengthen in the winter window. The convergence of Paixão's willingness to leave and Marseille's financial need creates favourable conditions for Sunderland to revive their interest.
