Unai proves you don't need to leave this club to be the best in the world

Unai Simón won the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or gala in London; Terzic praised the goalkeeper's achievement while staying at Athletic Bilbao.

Unai Simón won the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world's best goalkeeper, at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday. Athletic, former Bilbao manager Edin Terzic was asked about the recognition and praised his goalkeeper's accomplishment. "My assessment of him doesn't change," Terzic said. "The only difference now is that everyone recognises it. We're very happy that one of ours has reached the pinnacle of world football. I have no merit in this trophy — I simply benefit from his great level."

Terzic highlighted the support system around Simón, thanking his family, fellow goalkeepers Padilla and Mikel Santos who push him daily in training, and goalkeeper coach Aitor Iru. The manager emphasised the significance of Simón's achievement while remaining at Athletic Bilbao, where he developed through the club's academy in Lezama. "The most wonderful message Unai leaves is that it proves you don't need to leave this club, this city or your homeland to become the best in the world," Terzic said.
