Dowman to miss three matches after appeal rejected

The 16-year-old midfielder will serve a three-match ban after his red card appeal from Tuesday's Carabao Cup loss to Fleetwood was rejected.

Arsenal's Max Dowman will miss three matches after the FA rejected his appeal against a straight red card shown in the 85th minute of Tuesday's Carabao Cup loss at Fleetwood. The 16-year-old midfielder was dismissed for violent conduct after reacting to a heavy challenge by Fleetwood's Harrison Neal, with his foot making contact with the opponent. The match finished 1-1 before League Two Fleetwood won 5-3 on penalties.

It is Dowman's second red card in a month, having also been sent off while representing England's Under-19s. Manager Mikel Arteta appeared visibly frustrated as Dowman left the field. Arsenal are already short on wing options with Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis and Noni Madueke currently injured. The Gunners return to Premier League action away to Liverpool on Sunday.
