Trent Alexander-Arnold tipped to seal Premier League transfer to 'avoid' Liverpool situation

Alexander-Arnold, third-choice at Real Madrid under Mourinho, is being linked with a January move to Chelsea as an alternative to a Liverpool return.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has fallen down the pecking order at Real Madrid since Jose Mourinho's arrival in summer 2025, starting just four matches this season. The former Liverpool right-back, who joined Los Blancos in June 2025 for £10million, is thought to be unhappy with his lack of game time and is now behind Federico Valverde and Denzel Dumfries in the right-back pecking order.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has suggested Chelsea could offer Alexander-Arnold an exit route when the January transfer window opens. Chelsea are keen to strengthen at right-back with Reece James sidelined until at least mid-January following knee surgery, with Malo Gusto currently deputising.

While Alexander-Arnold has been tipped to make a sensational return to Liverpool, Brown believes that is unlikely given the circumstances of his departure. "There's always the talk about him going back to Liverpool as well, but I don't think that's going to be a possibility because of the way he left, nobody was particularly happy," Brown told Football Insider. Chelsea could be the more realistic option if they decide to make a move.
