How Suzuki has wowed Villa fans since replacing Martinez

Suzuki has impressed Villa fans and manager Emery since arriving from Parma in summer, excelling in build-up play and shot-stopping while adapting quickly to Emery's system.

Aston Villa fans have embraced young Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as a worthy successor to Emiliano Martinez. The 24-year-old, signed from Parma in the summer, has impressed with standout displays including an excellent performance in Villa's win over Manchester City, where he made several crucial saves and looked composed with the ball at his feet.

Manager Unai Emery praised Suzuki's mentality and ambition, noting that the goalkeeper chose Villa over potential moves elsewhere because of the club's project. Suzuki had been identified by Paris Saint-Germain as a long-term replacement for Gianluigi Donnarumma, but opted for Villa's development pathway instead.

While Suzuki shares some traits with Martinez—notably his ability to claim crosses in the penalty area—his key strength lies in build-up play. Emery highlighted his ability to play short passes, break the opponent's press, and distribute long balls with either foot. His superior range and speed of pass, demonstrated on his debut against Arsenal with a strike described by Gary Neville as "one of the best passes" he had ever seen, sets him apart. Combined with his reflexes, shot-stopping ability, and sweeping skills behind Villa's high line, Suzuki has adapted swiftly to Emery's system and become a key reason for fan optimism about the club's refresh.
