Chelsea are get-out-of-jail-free card for under-fire managers ahead of Michael Carrick visit

Carrick stays on as Man United manager despite 3-0 loss to Bournemouth; board split on replacements Howe and Nagelsmann.

Michael Carrick has retained his position as Manchester United manager despite the club's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, a result that appeared to seal his fate. The decision to keep the 34-cap England international came as the board remained divided over whether to pursue Eddie Howe or Julian Nagelsmann as his replacement.

Carrick faces a daunting run of fixtures over the next three weeks, with Chelsea, Aston Villa and Liverpool in the Premier League sandwiched around a Champions League clash with Roma. However, history suggests Chelsea may offer him a lifeline. Several of his predecessors have benefitted from timely victories against the Blues: Mikel Arteta steadied Arsenal with a 3-1 win over Chelsea on Boxing Day 2020 when the club was in crisis, Daniel Farke transformed Leeds' season with a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, and Erik ten Hag eased pressure with a 2-0 win courtesy of Scott McTominay's double. Even Ruben Amorim, Carrick's immediate predecessor, briefly bought himself time with a result against Chelsea after Sir Jim Ratcliffe stressed the need for improved on-field performances.
