Aston Villa announce legal action against Jamie Carragher in shock statement

Aston Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris announced the club is taking legal action against Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher over comments he made about manager Unai Emery and the club's ambitions.

Aston Villa have initiated legal action against Jamie Carragher following comments the Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit made on the Stick to Football podcast this week. Chairman Nassef Sawiris released a statement saying the club will "not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football".

Carragher's remarks centred on speculation linking Aston Villa manager Unai Emery to the Manchester United job. While praising Emery's track record, Carragher suggested the manager would want to manage a "giant" club and that there is a hierarchy in football, telling Villa fans to "shut the f**k up" and stating "Aston Villa will never be Manchester United". He also questioned whether Emery's previous spells at PSG and Arsenal had been affected by dressing room egos.

After backlash from Villa supporters on social media, Carragher responded on X claiming his comments were a joke and pointing to years of praise he has given Emery and Villa, including congratulating them on winning the Europa League in Istanbul. He has not yet publicly responded to Villa's legal action announcement.
