Ole Gunnar Solskjaer addresses Manchester United rumours directly – Clear answer on Old Trafford return

Solskjaer ruled out returning to manage United now, backing Carrick instead and denying he made demands when considered for the interim role last year.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has publicly backed Michael Carrick as the right manager for Manchester United, despite speculation linking the former interim boss with a potential return to Old Trafford.

Carrick is under pressure after a poor start to the season that has left United facing a potential bottom-three finish. Solskjaer, who managed United from 2018 to 2021, told TV2 that Carrick has what it takes to move the club forward. "He understands the club, understands the fans, and knows what's required," Solskjaer said, adding that the two are "incredibly alike."

Solskjaer also addressed rumours about his own future at the club. He confirmed he held talks with United over the interim manager position last year following Ruben Amorim's sacking, but denied making any demands that cost him the job. "I had a good chat with Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada. We didn't discuss contract length or anything of the sort. I offered to step in if needed, and I made no demands," he said. While admitting he has unfinished business at Old Trafford and would have been willing to step in for another interim spell, Solskjaer made clear he is not seeking the job now, saying he would only consider a return if Carrick "does well for ten years and decides to step down."
