Flick, more inventive than ever at Barcelona

Flick is tactically repositioning players across the pitch to solve squad gaps, with Raphinha thriving as a centre-forward with 15 goals in 10 league games.

Hansi Flick is making tactical virtue out of necessity at Barcelona, repositioning players in unfamiliar roles to compensate for squad shortages. The most successful example has been moving Raphinha to centre-forward, where he has scored 15 goals in 10 league matches and become the league's top scorer.

Other recent repositionings include Brian Fariñas as a right-back and Frenkie de Jong as a centre-back, both deployed against Alavés. Gerard Martín's conversion to left-back proved so effective it changed Barcelona's transfer strategy, convincing Flick to abandon plans for a left-sided centre-back. Xavi Espart has also become a credible full-back on either flank, earning comparison to Philipp Lahm from Flick.

Flick's approach involves careful planning and training rather than improvisation, with players briefed days in advance and tactical adjustments practiced before matches. The strategy reflects Barcelona's approach to sustainability, though the January transfer window remains an option to address squad depth.
