Ten Hag launches scathing attack on Cristiano Ronaldo: Real Madrid implicated

Ten Hag criticised Ronaldo's mentality at Manchester United, saying the forward couldn't maintain elite standards and that Real Madrid's strength lies in knowing when to move on from declining players.

Erik ten Hag, now Nicaragua manager, launched a scathing critique of Cristiano Ronaldo during an ESPN interview, reflecting on their time together at Manchester United. Ten Hag said that while great teams must support their best players, those players must also subordinate themselves to the team — a dynamic he identified as problematic with Ronaldo.

Ten Hag explained that Ronaldo's decline began at Juventus and has continued since. He praised Real Madrid's ability to recognise when a player's level is dropping and to part ways at a moment when the outside world still perceives them at their peak. Ten Hag stated that when he arrived at Manchester United, he outlined his tactical vision and Ronaldo's role, but ultimately the player could not maintain the physical and mental demands required to compete at the highest level in the Premier League, Champions League, or with Portugal.
