Gianluigi Donnarumma was signed to be world's best shot-stopper, but at Manchester City, he's merely fine

Analysis of Donnarumma's struggles at City since Rodri's injury forced a defensive shift; mounting errors show he's failing to justify the trade-off from their possession-based model.

Manchester City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma last summer to be an elite shot-stopper, departing from their decade-long philosophy of recruiting goalkeepers who could keep and progress the ball. The logic was sound when Rodri was fit and City could control matches through possession. But after Rodri's ACL injury in September 2024, City's defensive vulnerabilities exposed themselves: shots allowed per game jumped from 7.5 to 9.34 in 2024-25, then 9.71 in 2025-26, and now 10.56 in the Premier League this season.

With that extra pressure on goal, City needed Donnarumma to be the world-class shot-stopper they recruited. Instead, he's been merely fine. Recent errors include letting Nicolas Jackson's shot through his gloves at Villa Park, being beaten by Desire Doue and Vitinha in PSG's win at the Etihad, and conceding twice in Leipzig—including a near-post finish from Ridle Baku after drifting off his line. His 6ft 5in frame moves like an 18-wheeler; at 27, his sluggish positioning betrays 12 years as a first-team player.

Over 56 games in the Premier League and Champions League, Donnarumma has conceded six fewer goals than post-shot xG suggests—respectable by the numbers. But City didn't compromise their philosophy to be respectable. They need elite shot-stopping to offset the defensive chaos Rodri's absence created, and Donnarumma isn't delivering.
