Inside the indecision at Man United and the question that will decide Michael Carrick's future

United's Champions League win over Roma has bought Carrick breathing room; the club remains undecided on his future amid doubts over potential replacements.

Manchester United ended their longest winless run in 40 years with a 3-2 comeback victory over Roma in the Champions League, providing temporary respite for manager Michael Carrick amid mounting pressure on his position.

The club has been gripped by indecision over Carrick's future, with sources indicating no one in the hierarchy was willing to make a definitive call. That uncertainty has been compounded by significant doubts over potential replacements. Eddie Hoe is less favoured than perceived; Sebastian Hoeness would represent a major leap from Stuttgart; Fabian Hurzeler's ability to succeed without Brighton's structure is questioned; and Julian Nagelsmann's stock has dropped considerably following his Bayern Munich experience. Cesc Fabregas is impressing at Como but is viewed as Mikel Arteta's eventual successor at Arsenal. Antonio Conte remains a possibility as a proven title winner, though questions linger over whether United's squad can sustain success under him.

Underlying data suggests United's performance hasn't been quite as poor as appearances suggest, with numbers almost identical to last season. The team may simply be on the wrong side of thin margins. The next fixture—against Aston Villa and manager Unai Emery before the international break—will be crucial. Villa have won only once at Old Trafford in 15 years, and Emery has never won there.
