The world's longest match

Athletic and Real Sociedad both issued statements after Sunday's derby, focusing on a controversial Aramburu challenge on Nico Williams and refereeing decisions.

The Athletic Club versus Real Sociedad derby from Sunday continues to dominate discussion days later, with both clubs issuing formal statements on Monday addressing the match's controversial moments. The focal point remains a challenge by Real Sociedad's Aramburu on Athletic's Nico Williams, which has sparked debate over whether a penalty should have been awarded. Athletic defended the refereeing collective while taking subtle jabs, while Real Sociedad highlighted three categories of errors including the disputed penalty. Athletic won the match at a packed San Mamés, with goalkeeper Unai Simón showcasing his form after being named the world's best goalkeeper this year. Despite the quality of football and emotion on display, the post-match narrative has been dominated by the single controversial incident rather than the sporting spectacle itself.
