Six police cars swoop on Newcastle star as Wales international arrives on scene

Newcastle defender Dedic was intercepted by police after being spotted with a bow and arrows near a reservoir; equipment was seized but no threat was found.

Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic was at the centre of a dramatic police operation on Wednesday afternoon after being spotted carrying a bow and arrows in the Northumberland countryside. A concerned member of the public reported seeing Dedic and a friend with the equipment near a reservoir, prompting at least six police vehicles, including armed response units, to be dispatched to the Harlow Hill area.

Officers intercepted the pair around seven miles away in the Darras Hall estate, where they searched their vehicle and seized the bow and arrows. Dedic was questioned about his activities. Police later confirmed the equipment was believed to be for recreational use and posed no threat to the public. In an unusual twist, former Newcastle and Wales defender Paul Dummett and goalkeeper Mark Gillespie arrived at the scene by chance and stopped to offer assistance.

It is understood Dedic and his friend had fired arrows in the countryside, though hunting with a bow and arrow is illegal in the UK. Newcastle is not expected to take disciplinary action against the 24-year-old Bosnia international, though there is a sense he was naive to carry such equipment openly. Dedic, who joined from Benfica in the summer, is expected to be available for Saturday's Premier League trip to Fulham.
