De la Fuente on Barrenetxea: "It's not a gamble, it's recognition of his work"

former Spain manager De la Fuente called up Real Sociedad winger Barrenetxea for Nations League duty, describing it as recognition of his form rather than a gamble.

Ander Barrenetxea has been recalled to Spain's senior squad for the Nations League after seven and a half months away, with manager Luis de la Fuente emphasizing the decision reflects the player's performances rather than experimental selection.

De la Fuente highlighted Barrenetxea's previous appearances in lower age groups and a strong showing against Egypt, noting his versatility across both flanks fits the team's current needs. "He's performing very well this season, he's a player with a lot of potential, and he fits the demands we place on wide players," De la Fuente said. The call-up sees Víctor Muñoz, currently at Liverpool, left out of the squad.
