Award for Bernardo Silva

Real Madrid midfielder Bernardo Silva named Portugal captain following Cristiano Ronaldo's international retirement; has 115 caps, most among eligible players.

Bernardo Silva has been appointed Portugal captain following Cristiano Ronaldo's retirement from international football. Manager Jorge Jesus confirmed the decision based on international appearances, stating that Silva has the most caps (115) among the five senior candidates for the role.

Jesus outlined the captaincy hierarchy in a press conference: Silva leads with 115 appearances, followed by Bruno Fernandes (97), Rúben Dias (84), João Cancelo (77), and Rúben Neves (73). The manager noted that all five were previously players under his management at club level.

Silva, who has recently gained prominence at Real Madrid, now takes on the leadership role for Portugal's post-Ronaldo era. Despite limited minutes in the recent international break under Jesus, the midfielder's appointment reflects his experience and standing within the squad.
