Flying keeper: David Raya is defender and attacker for Arsenal too

Raya has become indispensable to Arsenal's title challenge through his willingness to take risks as a sweeper-keeper, establishing himself as a key figure in the Premier League's best defence.

David Raya has quietly established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League since joining Arsenal in summer 2023. Former former Brentford manager Thomas Frank, who worked with the Spanish keeper for four years at The Bees, recently highlighted what makes Raya so effective in his role. When Raya signed for Arsenal, there were questions about whether he could displace Aaron Ramsdale, but three seasons on he has become a crucial player for the Gunners. Arsenal's defence has conceded fewer goals than any other Premier League side over the past three seasons, and Raya's willingness to take risks—acting as both defender and attacker—has made him indispensable to that success.
