Belgium, De Winter refuses call-up. Van Bommel: "There will be consequences"

De Winter declined Belgium's Nations League call-up against Italy and Turkey; Van Bommel warned of long-term consequences.

Koni De Winter has refused his call-up to the Belgian national team for upcoming Nations League matches against Italy and Turkey. Manager Mark Van Bommel explained in a press conference that De Winter felt uncomfortable after not playing in the World Cup and during the recent international break. Van Bommel indicated the decision will have consequences: "It's not about him being on the bench last time. This is a situation that's been dragging on for a while. As a coach, you have to accept it, but obviously it will have long-term consequences." Kongolo from Genk has been called up as De Winter's replacement.
