Vinicius in a tight spot

Vinicius returns from suspension at Valencia but faces reduced playing time under Mourinho, who warns he will manage the Brazilian's minutes based on performance.

Vinicius completes his four-match suspension for pulling Saliba's hair at Valencia on Friday, but his status at Real Madrid has shifted markedly under José Mourinho. The manager made clear that the Brazilian's return will not automatically restore him to his previous role, stating: "When Vinicius returns to normal and is available, I will manage the situation."

Mourinho emphasised that team performance takes priority over individual players. Vinicius has played 12 minutes less per match on average under the Portuguese coach compared to Xabi Alonso's tenure this season. Diomande has emerged as a genuine threat to his left-back position, delivering commanding performances. The statistics tell the story: Vinicius has accumulated 801 minutes so far this season, well below the 1,420 minutes he played in 2024-25.

The underlying issue is that Real Madrid's attack has functioned effectively without him. The team scored four against Sevilla, won 1-2 at Barcelona, and dominated Santander with 22 shots in a 0-3 victory. Mourinho defended Vinicius's performance in Athens against AEK, calling it a match suited to him, but the overall message is clear: the Brazilian must rediscover his best form to reclaim his place.
