Bayern Munich hold off Freiburg in first game without Kompany

Bayern beat Freiburg 3-1 to reclaim top spot, with assistant Aaron Danks in charge after manager Kompany's hospitalization.

Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-1 away victory at Freiburg on Sunday, their first match since manager Vincent Kompany was admitted to hospital after collapsing at the club's training ground. Assistant Aaron Danks took charge in the dugout.

Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry scored in the first half to put Bayern in control. Freiburg pulled one back through Tom Bischof's own goal with eight minutes remaining, but Michael Olise sealed the win in stoppage time. The victory moved Bayern back to the summit after Borussia Dortmund's Saturday win against Frankfurt had briefly knocked them off top.

Kompany, the former Manchester City and Belgium defender, remains in stable condition in hospital. Bayern's director of sport Max Eberl said his absence is expected to last weeks rather than days, with examinations continuing.
