Michael Carrick sack news LIVE: Manchester United decision latest as new manager talks to begin

Michael Carrick's position remains uncertain after a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth; Eddie Howe is the leading candidate to replace him, with compensation of up to £6m required.

Michael Carrick's future as Manchester United manager hangs in the balance following Sunday's 3-0 loss to Bournemouth. The head coach returned to Carrington on Monday with no final decision made by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Glazers and senior club executives. Carrick is expected to lead training on Tuesday, but his position for Saturday's trip to Chelsea remains uncertain.

United are exploring replacements, with Eddie Howe emerging as the leading candidate. According to reports, Ratcliffe is leaning towards appointing the former Bournemouth and Newcastle manager, partly because he prefers a homegrown coach. Howe has been analysing United's recent matches in preparation. Other names linked include Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte and Unai Emery. Dismissing Carrick and appointing a successor could cost United up to £6m in compensation.

United sit 16th in the Premier League, prompting frustration among supporters. No public statement on Carrick's future is expected until Tuesday morning.
