Cristiano Ronaldo's 2008 Ballon d'Or award has been voted the greatest of all time in a public poll by the trophy's organizers.
Cristiano Ronaldo's 2008 Ballon d'Or, won while playing for Manchester United, has been voted the best Ballon d'Or of all time in a public poll announced by the award's organizers on Wednesday.
That edition topped the voting ahead of Lionel Messi's 2012 award with Barcelona and Ronaldo's own 2017 Ballon d'Or from his time at Real Madrid. The awards of both players dominate the top eleven positions until Brazilian Ronaldo Nazário's 2002 award appears.
Ronaldo's 2008 win was the first of five Ballon d'Or awards he would receive, followed by wins in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017. Messi holds the record for most Ballon d'Or awards with eight, won in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
